Boys Town has been a national leader in the care and treatment of children since its founding more than 90 years ago by Father Edward Flanagan.
As one of the largest nonprofit, nonsectarian child and family care organizations in the country, Boys Town provides compassionate, research-proven treatment for behavioral, emotional and physical problems.
Each year Boys Town programs and services touch the lives of 1.4 million people nationwide. In 2009, that included 21,458 children who received direct care through youth care programs and 42,136 children and families that received direct care through health care programs.
Boys Town also has taken a leadership role in advocating for change in the current child care system, which often offers fragmented and ineffective treatment.
The Village of Boys Town in Nebraska remains the national headquarters for Boys Town and is the research, program development and administrative center of the organization.
Boys Town’s outreach is national in scope, with treatment and care programs at more than a dozen sites across the country. Even more children and families receive benefits through the training and assistance Boys Town offers to hundreds of organizations, including schools and other youth care organizations. The Boys Town National Hotline℠ has handled more than 8 million calls since opening in 1989, and provides assistance to children and parents 24/7, year round.
Boys Town National Research Hospital℠ in Omaha, Nebraska, is internationally recognized as a leader in the treatment of childhood deafness, speech problems, visual impairment and related communication disorders. Its research programs seek improved diagnostic and treatment techniques for young children, and it is a world leader in research on Usher syndrome.
