Q: Where do I start if I have never exercised?
A:
  • Begin with 3 short 10 minute periods a day.
  • Vary the intensity of the exercises.
  • Make an appointment with yourself to exercise.
  • Put on your shoes and move.
  • Incorporate activity into your family life.
  • Get help from a Personal Trainer if you need it.
Q: How much exercise should I do?
A: Experts recommend 30-60 minutes a day. As a minimum, the American College of Sports Medicine recommends for those under the age of 65 to:

  • Do moderately intense cardio 30 minutes a day, five days a week, OR
  • Do vigorously intense cardio 20 minutes a day, 3 days a week, AND
  • Do 8-10 strength-training exercises, 8-12 repetitions of each exercise twice week.
Q: Why should I lift weights?
A: Lifting weights not only will help you to lose weight, but will help you to maintain that weight loss. The additional muscle will:

  • Help you keep your metabolism revved up, burning more calories.
  • The stronger you are the better cardio workout you will have.
  • Gaining muscle will help you look more defined and will tone your physique.
Q: What are the best exercises for losing weight?
A: Endurance exercises, such as bicycling, jogging, walking at a moderate intensity (you can talk without running out of breath) are good choices. Build up to a 40-60 minute workout. Strength training is necessary to prevent muscle loss when losing weight.
Q: Does exercise really help me lose weight?
A: Exercise alone does not always lead to weight loss. Regular exercise will:
  • Help your body burn more of the calories you consumed during the day.
  • Prevent muscle loss that occurs when you are dieting and losing weight.
  • Build up the amount of your muscle tissue. The more muscular you are the more calories you burn.
  • Exercise will lead to a more toned and slimmer you.
