KVC Foster Care FAQ

Q: What does KVC do?
A: KVC helps some families while the children remain in-home, other children are served out-of-home in foster families or other community placements. Services are coordinated to strengthen the family systems and ensure the safety and wellbeing of the children. KVC helps children and families in 19 southeast and eastern Nebraska counties.
Q: Why does a child come into foster care?
A: Usually a child enters the foster care system because of a breakdown in the family home, which makes the home an unsuitable place for the child to live. Other times, a child may be placed in foster care because of physical or emotional challenges that the birth parents are unable to manage.
Q: How long do children stay with a foster family?
A: Most foster care placements are temporary. The majority of children return to their own families once the problems have been resolved. A few children go on to adoptive families.
Q: Can foster families adopt their foster children
A: Usually this is not the plan. Most of the children in foster care are not legally free for adoption. If adoption becomes the plan for a foster child a foster parent can talk with the case worker to be considered to adopt the child. KVC works to insure that the adoption plan is the best possible plan for the child, now and in the future.
Q: How can I help KVC children and families?
