What makes Camp Anokijig different from other summer camps?
Camp Anokijig is proud to provide opportunities for all campers to customize their camp experience. This means campers are encouraged to try all activities throughout the week, but are given the freedom of choice to choose which activities to focus on. Staff members assist campers in the decision-making process.
In what type of accommodations will my child stay?
Campers will stay in platform tents, cabins, or lodges, determined by gender, age and grade. Multiple staff members live right with the campers. Bathroom facilities with hot showers and flush toilets are located in or near each living section.
How does Camp Anokijig select their staff members?
Our staff members are selected for their understanding of young people and their ability to positively communicate with them. We keep a 4:1 camper to staff member ratio. Many of our staff members are former Anokijig campers who bring a unique perspective of Anokijig spirit and tradition to their leadership style. All staff members participate in a thorough interview, background check, and extensive staff training program.
How do you keep kids safe and healthy at Camp Anokijig?
We develop a culture of safety at Camp Anokijig and this is the main priority of every year-round and summer staff member we hire. Many staff members are former campers who have grown through our volunteer Camp Anokijig Leadership Program. Each is passionate about working with children and views what they do and the activities they lead, through the eyes of a parent. We hire only the best staff possible. We purposely keep a minimum 4:1 camper to staff member ratio that is usually closer to 3:1, to ensure that our staff members can be there for ANY child at ANY time.
Medical personnel are onsite and on duty 24 hours a day to dispense medication (prescription and over-the-counter) and attend to minor illnesses or injuries. Physicians are also available with a clinic and hospital only minutes away. Waterfront staff members are certified lifeguards. All Senior Staff members hold current CPR and First Aid certifications.
Our kitchen serves a variety of nutritious, balanced meals each day. Quiet hours in Camp are from 10pm - 7am each day to allow all campers to get ample sleep. Multiple water locations are available throughout Camp.
Can I visit my child?
Visits during the week can often interrupt the camp experience and cause feelings of homesickness. Therefore, family visitors are welcome at Camp, but we recommend visiting on the arrival and departure days of each session. We would be happy to schedule a tour to view the facilities and speak with a camp director prior to your child's session.
Can my child bunk with a friend?
Yes! We will honor one housing request per camper so that two friends in the same age group may stay in the same living section.
Are discounts available?
Yes! An early-bird registration rate is available if we receive your registration prior to May 1, 2014. In addition, sibling and bring-a-friend discounts are available for programs with a minimum one-week stay.
How big are the cabin groups?
It can vary. Some cabin and tent living sections can house as few as 12 campers, while others can house up to 48. Regardless of how many campers each living section can accommodate, we keep a camper to staff member ratio of 4:1, usually 3:1.
