About Us

Childhood is not a race to see how quickly a child can read, write, and count. Childhood is a small window of time to learn and develop at the pace which is right for each individual child.

Preparing for a lifetime of learning is the goal of our programs at Bright Start.  At Bright Start Preschool we believe children learn through play with a curriculum that is flexible and emerges from children’s ideas, thoughts and observations. Topics for study in all our classes emerge from the talk/actions of children, through community or family events, as well as the known interests of children. With the use of The Creative Curriculum along with an environment influenced by the Reggio Emilia approach, materials and experiences are offered that encourage children to make discoveries, to experiment with their own ideas, and to interact in meaningful ways with other people.  Educators are constantly engaged in a process of observation and documentation in order to develop the best possible educational environment for children.

The Creative Curriculum®

The Creative Curriculum is an award-winning curriculum system for children birth through kindergarten. It features research-based content and daily resources that are fully aligned with the Head Start Child Development and Early Learning Framework and state early learning standards.

Using exploration and discovery as a way of learning, The Creative Curriculum enables children to develop confidence, creativity, and lifelong critical thinking skills.

  •     Based on 38 objectives for development and learning, which are fully aligned with the Head Start Child Development and Early Learning Framework as well as early learning standards for every state.
  •     Offers daily opportunities to individualize instruction, helping meet the needs of every type of learner.
  •     Addresses all the important areas of learning, from social-emotional and math to technology and the arts, and incorporates them throughout every part of every day.
  •     Offers daily, built-in opportunities for observation, allowing teachers to clearly see the strong relationship between curriculum and assessment.
  •     Assessment portfolios for each child are shared with parents to provide parents with concrete evidence of your child's progress and development.
  •     Complete support for working with English- and dual-language learners.
  •     Parent / Teacher conferences twice each school year and a visit to your home by your child's teacher.
  •     Access to a classroom sharing website to enable parents to stay informed about lesson plans, activities, newsletters and reminders.
  •     Opportunities to participate in your child's classroom as much or as little as your schedule allows.

At Bright Start, we believe…
That each child is strong, competent and capable individual full of ideas and knowledge.
That children are born with a natural ability to learn from their surroundings and experiences.
That all children have the right to a safe, loving and nurturing environment in which to grow and explore the world.

That a physical environment that is beautiful, clean, inviting, and full of natural materials and light is crucial in facilitating children’s experiences.
That the educator’s job is to support and scaffold learning led by each child’s interests.
In an emergent curriculum that builds upon the interests of children.
Children learn best through experiences with open-ended natural materials that provide opportunities for exploration, experimentation, creativity, and play.
That open and honest communication and dialogue among educators and families is a cornerstone to positive experiences for children.
In the collaboration between children, teachers, parents and community.

Bright Start Preschool is owned and operated by sisters Nicole Schuiling and Danielle Robertson. The school was opened in August 2007 because of the desire Danielle and Nicole had to fill the void for a premier childcare in the Grand Ledge / Lansing area. These women feel blessed to be able to provide the highest quality of care and education for your children.  Meet our teachers here!

Our Vision:
Bright Start educators and staff are dedicated to early childhood education and it is our goal to provide a safe, loving, engaging, interesting, respectful and nurturing community for all children and their families where they can learn, grow and develop at their own pace. We believe children learn through child-led play and exploration, with materials chosen purposefully by teachers who are there to support and scaffold learning. Effort and thought goes into creating spaces for children reflecting the belief that children deserve the very best, and that a physical environment that is beautiful, clean, inviting, and full of natural materials and light is crucial in facilitating children’s experiences. All this combined with a consistent schedule full of opportunities for children to make choices, solve social problems, and gain social independence is what we believe is necessary to prepare young children for the future.

Our Environment:
We view the environment at our school as the third teacher. As the third teacher, our environment invites children to explore and create in a comfortable home-like setting. Like your home, we have created spaces that are not only classrooms but a beautiful place that reflects the interests and individuality of each child. Open-ended materials such as wood, ramps, and recycled objects invite opportunities to experiment and problem-solve. Our classrooms are furnished with natural materials, keeping in tune our desire to live an earth-friendly existence. Our classrooms offer opportunities for dramatic play, art, building, literacy, math, and science/discovery.
