Needle Solution?

The ancient practice of acupuncture might help some women who are undergoing fertility treatment to get pregnant.

Acupuncture has become more popular in the United States in recent years. According to a new study, it might improve women’s chances of success with in vitro fertilization. Researchers combined the results from 24 earlier studies and found that the combined data show evidence that acupuncture may increase women’s pregnancy rates and successful birth rates.

In vitro fertilization requires removing a woman’s eggs, fertilizing them to create embryos, then placing the embryos into the woman’s uterus. This process can be stressful and expensive, and many times it doesn’t work.

Some experts say acupuncture may be helpful by effecting blood flow to a woman’s uterus and ovaries. It may also help them cope with stress during a challenging time.

Women who are undergoing IVF and are interested in acupuncture should first talk to their doctor and fertility specialist.
