Sarah Grady Ackerman talks with Karen Mica from America’s Second Harvest of the Big Bend about a couple of programs that can help moms cut costs and improve their child’s nutrition. America’s Second Harvest of the Big Bend has two USDA programs that are federally funded that service the children in our eleven county area. One is the afterschool snack program. Those programs are at community centers, churches, parks, or any nonprofit that has an afterschool program including enrichment and that is in an area where the school zone serves 50% or more of children on their school lunch program, they qualify to be on the afterschool snack program. Moms would know their children are receiving a nutritional snack at these sites. They are not allowed to charge for the snack. There is also the summer food program during the summer when school is out. The parks and recreation may have summer food programs that also give out nutritional meals and food.
