Gulf Coast Facial Plastics & ENT Center FAQ
Q: WHAT CAUSES SINUS INFECTIONS?
A: Usually, people get sinus infections due to swelling of the lining of your nose, which then blocks the sinuses. When the sinuses cannot function properly, your face/head begins to fill up with not only fluid, but bacteria. When a person suffers from chronic sinus issues, the person should begin to investigate their home and work environments, allergies, and also facial structural problems. Medicine as well as surgery is options to alleviate recurrent sinus infections. Sinus infections should not be ignored and can lead to more serious health issues.
Q: WHAT MEDICINES ARE RECOMMENDED FOR SINUS INFECTIONS?
A: Initially, I recommend a treatment of an antibiotic to clear up any infection that’s present, as well as a mediation that allows the sinuses to drain. The most important thing you can do to keep your sinuses clear is prevention! If you have done what was recommended above (checking your environment, allergies, and facial structure), a CT scan can be extremely beneficial in order to zero in on any other risk factors that may be present, which allows for a more effective treatment.
Q: WHY DO CHILDREN TEND TO GET EAR INFECTIONS?
A: Chronic ear infections mean there is a drainage issue in, or around, the Eustachian tube (extends from the ear to the back of the nose). If this tube becomes obstructed, fluid develops in the middle ear and then bacteria is given a fertile area in which to grow! Antibiotics are the most common course of treatment for the infection; however, long-term treatment would include the management of the Eustachian tube by in insertion of ear tubes (tympanostomy), which usually work their way out over time. Contact a Fellow-ship trained ear/nose/throat physician for the most current treatment options.
UNDERSTANDING INJECTABLES
There are numerous products on the market to help erase the signs of aging, but with so many options – How do you know which alternative is best for you? We’ll break in down in alphabetical order:
BOTOX®
Despite what you may have heard, when you receive a Botox treatment, you can still smile, frown, and look surprised without those lines between your brows. Botox has been used therapeutically for more than 17 years to treat a variety of medical conditions, but usually is used for frown lines between the brows in people ages 18 to 65, as well as for crows feet and forehead wrinkles. An injection usually lasts up to 4 months.
DYSPORT™
Similar to Botox, Dysport is used to treat frown lines, crow’s feet, and lines on the forehead.
JUVÉDERM™
Juvéderm is an injectable gel that is used to instantly smooth out your wrinkles, specifically those “parentheses” marks about your mouth area and to enlarge the lips. As you age, Juvéderm replaces the naturally hydrating substance called hyaluronic acid (a natural sugar substance found in our bodies) to bring back your skin’s volume.
RADIESSE®
One of the longer-lasting fillers that stimulates grow of your own collagen.
RESTYLANE®
Restylane restores volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds.)
SCULPTRA® Aesthetic
This is the “newest kid on the block” … and works gradually, resulting in a more youthful-looking appearance that can last up to two (2) years. Sculptra is used to correct the shallow-to-deep nasolabial folds (smile lines), contour deficiencies, and other facial wrinkles that are treated with the appropriate injection. Up to three (3) injections over a few months has been shown to help correct lines and wrinkles by replacing lost collagen.
