Summer Fun ... Kid Style!

Summertime is here. And if you’re like me, and live in the Midwest, you’re welcoming the summer sun with eager anticipation. It was a harsh winter for many so these next few months are going to be welcomed – and I do hope you get to bask in the summer rays daily!

Ok … back to it …

While the sun will be shining bright very soon, the summer months also mean the kiddos will be looking for adventures and fun memories to be made. That means you’ll most likely have a whole lotta’ time on your hands figuring out the next great thing to do with them – without breaking the bank!

I’ve learned in recent years, after having my son, that it’s the simple things that matter most. So don’t rack your brain trying to think of the next great activity you’ll be doing. Just keep it simple.

First and foremost, GET OUTSIDE!!! Being cooped up all winter long made me – and my son – somewhat melancholy. So get in the great outdoors and soak up some summer rays! But be sure to grab the sunscreen before you head out!

And while you're outdoors, grab some sidewalk chalk. Draw your favorite animals or your favorite shapes and make a game out of it. Better yet – create your own version of Pictionary. And make em’ guess what exactly you’re trying to create!

Here are a few other ideas to get you having some fun - and laughs - kid style!

- Fly a Kite It’s pretty amazing seeing a kid in awe when a kite is flying high above them. You can buy one at a local grocery store – or make your own! National Geographic has a pretty nifty one you can create together! Check it out here!
- Take a Walk or Bike Ride Soak up some rays either walking or riding a bike with your kiddos. Ride to the park or your favorite ice cream shop. Not only will it be extra endorphins for you – but it will relieve some of their excitement – and energy too! And be sure to wear safety helmets too!
- Paint the Sidewalk So this goes along with grabbing a few sticks of sidewalk chalk and creating some art – however, take it a step further and grab some paint from the dollar store and let them paint a masterpiece! There doesn’t have to be any rhyme or reason to it – just let them do whatever strikes them! You can even try doing handprints and footprints and snap a picture to cherish down the road!

- Blow Bubbles Ok, so what kid, big or small doesn’t like to blow a few bubbles every now and then? It’s a fun way to soak up some sun and have some fun! Make it a game too - and 'catch' the bubbles! Use sidewalk chalk to tally up 'catches' and then go and have a Popsicle. :)

So what if it’s a rainy day?! Well, don’t worry. Here are a few ideas to try just in case the ‘great outdoors’ isn’t an option!

- Go to the Library I actually really LOVE taking my three-year-old to the library. Not only does he love to look at the books – but he loves to play with the toys! Yes. There are toys at our local library. Even a train track and my kid LOVES trains. He’s crazy about them. So, it’s a perfect afternoon! And if your library doesn’t have toys. Not to worry … that’s what the books are for. ;) Have them pick out their favorites and let them read them to you!

- Check out Kiwi Crate Ok, so I know I said I would try to NOT break your bank, but you MUST check out this fabulous little company called Kiwi Crate. Not only can you buy various activities, with all necessities included, but they have freebies on their website! And I’ll be honest. It’s not only fun for the kiddos – but the adults too! Go on. Go check em’ out over here: http://www.kiwicrate.com/.
- Snuggle and Watch a Film I know. You’ve probably been doing that all winter. But there is nothing like spending a little quality time with your little ones, cuddling and watching a movie. Pop some popcorn, together, make a few tasty snacks like this one, and this one, together, then grab a blanket and enjoy a snack/movie fest! Be sure to look over at your little ones every now and again too - just to marvel at their adorable-ness.

- Build a Fort Girls and boys alike can have some fun with this one! Just grab a few blankets and pillows and start building! It’s all about being a little creative and having some fun while doing it! Check out this handy little guide to building your very own epic blanket fort.

Above all, have fun. Make memories. Laugh until it hurts. And simply LOVE on your kiddos. They're the age they are right now only ONCE. So enjoy EVERY.SINGLE.MOMENT.
