Fitness Report: Tread and Shred

If your treadmill workout is lacking the boost you need to get motivated, don't give up just yet. A new treadmill class can spice up your old routine while helping you shed pounds, boost your endurance and even get you ready for that next marathon.

When it comes to running, Beth Carpenter says, "I'm one of those people that needs to be motivated by someone else."

Beth won't do it on her own but thanks to a new class, she doesn't have to. It's called "Tread and Shred."

Laura Schwartz told us, "It's an hour-long. Forty-five minutes of that hour is very constructed treadmill work."

The instructor determines the speed and incline.

Laura said, "We're kind of taking the guess work out of the treadmill workout so they don't have to think."

All they have to do is listen , push a few buttons and move. It's designed to be as if you were running outside with hills, inclines and different speeds.

"So we're going to go really intense up the hill and that's going to work the leg muscles and really work the strength and the endurance of the muscles," said Schwartz.

It's good for everyone from walkers to distance runners.

"We have people who are training for the Omaha marathon, the Lincoln marathon - trained for the Warrior Dash."

Laura says if you can walk you can do this class because you're always in control of your own pace. So while the person next to you may be running, you can walk.

"It's basically as challenging as you make it," said Carpenter.

But it doesn't end here on the treadmill. After 45 minutes of treadmill work there's still 15 more minutes left of challenging core work.

"I actually feel tired and like I really trained hard," said Carpenter

A good feeling now about running and a new workout.

Prairie Life Fitness at Midtown Crossing say the class has only been available for a few weeks and they've already received great feedback.
