Texas Health Presbyterian-WNJ FAQ
Q: When should my family get their flu shots?
A: In the fall, usually beginning in September. The Grayson County Health Department and local pharmacies, physician offices have already started offering it to the community.
Q: With work and school it is really difficult to get in to the doctor office for our flu shots. Are the vaccines being offered at some of the pharmacies the same as what I would get at the doctor’s office?
A: Yes. The goal is to provide access to as much of the community as possible. Pharmacies and many other organizations offer flu immunizations such as church groups, community shopping centers, and the County Health Department.
Q: My son is starting to play Jr. High football and I really worry about concussions. What are some simple signs to watch for in the event he gets a hard hit?
A: Any hit or fall that causes loss of consciousness should be evaluated immediately. Behavior that indicates the child is confused, having difficulty walking, headaches, or does not feel well should be evaluated by the healthcare provider. Helmets should fit well and be worn.
Q: I’m expecting my first child in a few months. I’ve really be torn about whether or not to breast feed. Honestly, I’m just not comfortable with it. Am I really depriving my child of a healthy life?
A: Breastfeeding provides many benefits to baby, mother, and the family. Breast milk provides antibodies to prevent illness to respiratory and tummy viruses. It decreases the incidence of obesity, juvenile onset diabetes, food allergies, and fewer middle ear infections just to name a few. The nursing mother tends to lose weight quicker, may have fewer menstrual cycles and hormonal swings associated with menstrual cycle, less chance of premenopausal ovarian cancer. For the family there is a significant savings of $1500 - $3000 for the first year of life in just the cost of artificial baby food (commercial formula) alone. Fewer infant illness saves a money on unscheduled visits to the doctor.
