Primary Medicine of North Texas FAQ
Q: What is Mesotherapy?
A: Mesotherapy is a procedure used for weight loss and body sculpting to reduce, eliminate and contour specific undesired fat pockets. This method targets the receptors on fat cells that produce lipogenesis (fat production) and lipolysis (fat breakdown). In both men and women, the ratio of alpha to beta receptors is generally 1:1 - above the waist. Below the waist, women have approximately 6 to 8 alpha receptors for every single beta receptor. This is the main reason women have trouble losing fat in their abdomens, buttocks and thighs: their bodies are designed to retain fat in those areas. Once injected into the skin, the formula slowly diffuses into the fat, and breaks it down. The number of weight loss and body sculpting treatments required varies from person to person.
Q: What is Botox?
A: BOTOX® Cosmetic is an injectable agent used to temporarily diminish or eliminate lines and wrinkles on the face by relaxing underlying facial muscles. It is derived from botulinum toxin type A, a bacterium-produced neuromuscular toxin that can be deadly in a pure state. BOTOX® Cosmetic contains a highly diluted form of the toxin and has been proven safe. Ideal BOTOX® Cosmetic candidates skin treatment are those who wish to see an improvement in their facial lines and wrinkles, but either do not wish to commit to a facial surgery, or simply cannot tolerate surgery.
Q: How can Botox help with pain?
A: The BOTOX® headache Treatment has been found to give relief to headache sufferers. The treatment of severe headaches really belongs to neurologists, not plastic surgeons. But the BOTOX® headache Treatment help is gaining acceptance. Migraine headache and associated headaches such as muscle contraction and chronic tension headache and neck pain are all potentially relieved with the use of BOTOX Ò. This medication was originally used to treat crossed eyes and later for conditions such as blepharospasm and torticollis (twisting necks) . More recently, BOTOX Ò was used by cosmetic surgeons to produce minor paralysis of facial muscles around the eyes and smooth out wrinkles. Many of the patients reported significant relief of a variety of types of headaches and various trials were instituted to prove that it works for the treatment of headache. Headaches are extremely common in the United States with an estimate of 30 million people affected such that they miss days from work or have chronic disability. BOTOX Ò is a new treatment for migraine. It works in chronic muscle tension-type headache in up to 87 percent. It also is quite effective in some patients who are not responding to any migraine preventive therapy. Our estimate of effect in this population is 75 percent. Overall, this is believed to be an effective, low risk treatment. In many instances this is a less expensive alternative than chronic daily therapy or frequent use of triptan medication. Nonetheless, BOTOX Ò does not work in every patient and alternative therapies must be kept in mind.
Q: What is Restylane
A: Restylane® products are cosmetic dermal fillers that replace lost volume and restore youthful contours to the skin to smooth away moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds). Restylane is made of hyaluronic acid. In the human body, natural hyaluronic acid provides volume and fullness to the skin. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane and Perlane has been modified slightly to last longer than the body's hyaluronic acid. Restylane® restores volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds).
