This article, entitled "The Benefits of Probiotics," comes from MomsEveryday correspondent Penny Oates.
You may have seen commercials or read articles touting the use of probiotics – but what are they? And should you be adding more to your diet?
Probiotics are organisms such as bacteria or yeast that are believed to improve health. Foods like yogurt, aged cheeses, miso and sauerkraut contain the active live cultures, and you can also take probiotics in supplements.
Many researchers believe probiotics can help us maintain a strong immune system and regulate digestion. A new study shows that the live concoctions of bacteria may even help reduce blood pressure.
Though the health benefits of probiotics need more research, you may want to reach for your favorite kind of yogurt more often, or give the supplement a try. As always, talk to your doctor about whether probiotics are right for you and your family.
