Q: How do I know what my weight should be?
Some studies are showing that your BMI may be a better indicator of heart disease than cholesterol. Modern medicine has made impressive declines in death rates from heart disease over the last 40 years, but this is being threatened by climbing rates of obesity, Type II diabetes and early signs of heart disease in adolescence.

Q: Is there a trick to losing weight?
Your weight is a balancing act, and calories are part of that equation. Fad diets may promise you that counting carbs or eating a mountain of grapefruit will make the pounds drop off. But when it comes to weight loss, it's calories that count. Weight loss comes down to burning more calories that you take in. You can do that by reducing extra calories from food and beverages and increasing calories burned through physical activity.
Once you understand that equation, you're ready to set your weight-loss goals and make a plan for reaching them. Remember, you don't have to do it alone. Talk to your doctor, family and friends for support. Also, plan smart: Anticipate how you'll handle situations that challenge your resolve and the inevitable minor setbacks.

Q: What are some of the program options available for weight loss?
There are many program options available. There are decision-free plans that many people find helpful. The decision-free diet includes a variety of HMR shakes, soup, multigrain cereal and, when appropriate, HMR entrees. You will attend a weekly group meeting, and get lifestyle education on building healthy eating habits and healthy physical activity into your daily routine.
We have a phone program for people who prefer to attend a class from their home and there are other program options that consist of eating healthy meals and snacks that include plenty of fruits, vegetables and lean protein. The Mayo Clinic Diet is our most recent addition to this type of program.
