K12 FAQ

Q: MYTH: You'll spend all day staring at a computer.
A: FACT: While attendance, planning and assessment are all recorded online, only about 30% of the K-8 lessons are taught online. In grades K-5, the K12 curriculum relies on printed and/or hands-on materials, including beautifully crafted textbooks, paint, rocks and microscopes. As students progress into middle- and high-school courses, much of the focus shifts from offline work to synchronous and asynchronous interaction with teachers and other classmates.
Q: MYTH: Online schools don't meet the curriculum requirements for public schools.
A: FACT: Lawrence Virtual School/Lawrence Virtual High School, Insight School of Kansas, and iQ Academy Kansas are online public schools that happen to operate outside of a traditional classroom. As public school students, your children will be expected to spend a certain amount of time of each day engaged in schoolwork. They will also be required to take standardized tests mandated by the state of Kansas. Our curriculum was developed by experts to meet or exceed Kansas Academic Standards, and has been proven to be one of the top-scoring online school curriculum programs in the nation.
Q: MYTH: Attending school online is a part-time job.
A: FACT: Students will need to spend, on average, about four to six hours on schoolwork each day, depending on grade level.
Q: MYTH: Students who attend online schools lack socialization and social skills.
A: FACT: Students who attend Lawrence Virtual School/Lawrence Virtual High School, Insight School of Kansas, and iQ Academy Kansas online public school programs have the opportunity to participate in many academic and social outings. These outings and activities may include trips to museums, skate parks, zoos, clubs, student government, dances and even graduation ceremonies.
Q: MYTH: There are hidden fees associated with enrolling in an online school program.
A: FACT: Since we are a public school program, there is no tuition. However, students and families will be responsible for providing some consumable materials (such as school supplies).
