American Cancer Society Relay For Life FAQ

What is Relay For Life?
Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society's Signature Fundraising event. In May 1985, Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Washington, ultimately raising $27,000 to help the American Cancer Society fight the nation’s biggest health concern cancer. A year later, 340 supporters joined the overnight event. Since those first steps, the Relay For Life movement has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, raising nearly $5 billion to fight cancer.

What Makes Relay Special?
Many moments create the unique Relay experience. Event details vary by location, but all events have key moments in common: They are oganized community fundraising walks that go anywhere from 6 to 24 hours in length, Teams of people camp out around a track and members of each team take turns walking around the track. Food, games and activities provide entertainment and build camaraderie in a Family-friendly environment for the entire community.

Why Do We Fundraise?
While the American Cancer Society is making progress toward a world without cancer, only with the support and efforts of our volunteers through Relay For Life and their dedication and fundraising efforts can we finish the fight against the disease.

With their help, we aren't just fighting one type of cancer we're fighting for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. Each person who shares the Relay For Life experience can take pride in knowing that they are working to create a world where this disease will no longer threaten our loved ones or rob anyone of another birthday.

Where does the money we raise go?
The money raised goes toward research and mission. For more than 65 years, the American Cancer Society has been finding answers that save lives - from changes in lifestyle to new approaches in therapies to improving cancer patients' quality of life. No single nongovernmental, not-for-profit organization in the US has invested more to find the causes and cures of cancer. Our mission programs such as Hope Lodge, where we house cancer patients and a family member when they have no where to stay while going through treatment at no cost, or Road To Recovery, where our volunteers take cancer patients to and from treatment and to doctor's apointments, when they have no way to get their, along with our Look Good Feel Better program which helps teach our patients how to deal withh the changes they are going through during treatment and teaches them beauty techniques and improve their self image while going through Chemo. Let us not forget our 24 hour call center and website that is available to anyone providing someone to talk to with the most up to date information on cancer care.

How can you become involved with Relay.
It is very easy to get involved with Relay For Life. Just go to relayforlife.org and put in the zip code where you live and you can find the local Relay near you. I have several Relays coming up very soon. Wayne County Relay is May 2, 2015 at Wayne High School. Their theme this year is "Tailgating For A Cure" this is a rain or shine event, we will be on the football field unless there is inclement weather, then we will move in to the gymnasium. So, please don't let a little rain stop you from coming out to the event. There will be live entertainment, taligating games with a new one this year "Bubble Soccer" that I am sure everyone will enjoy, so be sure and mark your calendars for this date. I also have events coming up in Cabell County on June 5, 2015 at Huntington High and June 6, 2015 in Lincoln County at Lincoln Primary Care Center.
