Cragg and Son Tree Company FAQ

As winter approaches what are some important tips to help keep you safe around your trees.
Trees are incredibly strong and resilient and their weaknesses often go over looked. But when fall rolls around it is easier to start seeing issues. As the Fall winds pick up to remove the leafs for the year it may uncover broken branches, rot and decay or animal habit. All of these things can contribute to a failure so its very important to keep your eye on them.

How often should a home owner have their trees inspected?
Tree inspections are a great tool ensure that the trees around your property are safe and can be enjoyed. Not all problems are visible and some beneath the surface can go unnoticed by even a seasoned professional like me. But a good rule of thumb is every 4-5 years have someone come out see whats going on. These consultations are inexpensive and can often get ahead of problems early that will result in a much lower fee to correct.

What wood makes the best firewood?
Great question with a interesting answer. The type of wood you are burning isn't nearly as important as the moisture level. A seasoned firewood of almost any species with a moisture content of 20% will out burn and heat any wood with a great moisture. When you reduce the moisture content you not only increase fuel efficiency but you reduce creosote build up. Its also really important to understand what you are buying. A truck load isn't really a unit of measurement so its often hard to know if you have received a fair amount of wood that's why we sell ours by the Cord or 1/2 cord. A cord is a stack 4 foot tall by 4 foot wide by 8 foot long and a 1/2 cord is well half that.

When is the best time of year to prune trees.
This is a multi layer answer. Some Hardwoods and Soft woods can respond well to a fall prune if the correct cuts and made and not too much wood is removed. Often too much wood is taken resulting in a stressed tree going into Winter which then opens the tree up to infection, insects and a host of other problems. I personally like to do most of my pruning early spring while the tree is still dormant and will be entering a growth cycle resulting in the wounds healing faster reducing the risk of problems.

Should a homeowner contract a tree care professional prior to contruction work.
Absolutely. One of the most important system on a tree is the root system. It takes very little disturbance to upset that delicate balance. I often see a construction project get completed to only find out that the massive tree was distressed and in the process and now dead. Resulting in a carefully planned removal over or near the newly constructed project which will cost more than removal prior to the construction.
