We inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.
One girl put it this way, "I learned that I am the boss of my brain." Helping girls take charge of their lives and define the future on their terms. You can also think of it as Can University—a place where girls learn that they can. No limits. No constraints. Only opportunities to be remarkable.
We believe that every girl can embrace who she is, can define who she wants to be, can rise to any challenge, can change the world. Can.
Girls on the Run of Cabell and Wayne Counties FAQ
Can you tell us a little bit about Girls on the Run?
Girls on the Run is a self-esteem building program for girls in 3rd-8th grade which integrates running into the curriculum. Our 10 week program address many issues that face young girls today- from body image, to peer pressure, from nutritional information to fitness. Each lesson is reinforced with a physical activity. At the end of each season, all of teams come together at a Celebration 5K to celebrate all they have accomplished and provide the girls with a real, concrete sense of accomplishment.
How has the program been received among the girls that have participated so far?
It has really been remarkable. We started the program in the fall of 2013 with 26 girls in two schools. We are finishing our third season this spring with 68 girls in 5 schools, and we hope to have over 100 girls in at least 9 different schools this fall. Last fall we launched our first "Girls on Track" Program at Barboursville Middle School and are working to add another middle school this Fall. We have had an overwhelming response. We have 5th graders who have completed a season going on to join the cross country teams in middle school because they discovered they love running. We've seen shy girls become more confident and even evolve into leaders. We've had teachers comment that they see a difference in behavior in the classroom. Anywhere we have gone, we have a positive story to tell. We are excited to be growing so fast and getting so many people involved in helping us bring this wonderful program to every school in Cabell and Wayne counties. We all know that girls who feel confident about themselves make better choices as they grow, and we are doing all we can to make sure everyone of our girls knows just how special she is.
How can people get involved?
We have many, many ways you can jump in!! We are a 100% volunteer based organization, so we are always looking for folks to help us continue spreading the word. If you are interested in a life-changing, hands on experience with the girls, you can coach a team! If you'd like to help mentor a girl from the start of the season through the Celebration 5K, we need running buddies. We need volunteers for the races and we have a variety of one-time volunteer needs that pop-up through out the year. We have our Celebration 5K for the Spring Season coming up soon- so we'd love to have anyone come join us!
When is the Celebration 5K?
The Celebration 5K is April 26th in Barboursville Park. Registration begins at 12:30. It's a $10 fee and shirts will be provided on a first come, first serve basis. This is a fun day and a FUN RUN- we don't have chips or timers. This race is for our girls and their running buddies and any one who wants to support them and join in cheering them on to the finish line! For many of our girls, this is the first time that they have tackled 3 miles, and the looks on their faces when they cross that finish line are priceless. They get it. They feel it. They realize they can DO ANYTHING, even something hard, if they try hard enough.
