As a visitors bureau director, what exactly does your job consist of?
My job is to promote our local events, attractions, museum, stores, antique shops, our 65,000 acre Shawnee State Forest and our Flood Wall murals.
Where are you located?
We are located in south central Ohio where State Route 23 and State Route 52 intersects,. Scioto County is located at the confluence of the Ohio and Scioto Rivers. About 45 minutes west of the Huntington area. My office is located at the scioto county Welcome Center at 342 Second St. Portsmouth.
What are some of the things that visitors like to see when they come to your area?
The first thing that comes to mind is our Flood Murals. It is 20 feet high. 2,000 feet long and depicts 2,000 years of history in the Southern Ohio area. It starts with the "Mound Builders" and proceeds through time, up to many of our local residents, athletes and attractions. We have 58 murals, all painted by muralist, Robert Dafford fo Lafayette, LA. Next would be the Portsmouth Brewing Company, our mcrobrewery, antique shops and of course, local eateries.
What type of events do you promote in Porstmouth-Scioto Co. area?
We promote any event that would appeal to the visitor in our area to make them stay a little longer or another day. Fun, local events like our Lucasville Trade Days, which is this Saturday & Sunday, The Miss Ohio USA Pageant, performances at the Vern Riffe Center for the ARTS, The Clark Planetarium located on the campus of Shawnee State University, exhibits at the Southern Ohio Museum, our local farmers Market, festivals like the Roy Rogers Festival, John Simon Sorghum Festival, River Days, White Tail Deer Festival, the Scioto Co. Fair, musical performances at local pubs or one of our many 5k or 10k runs.
