Simpson Dental Associates FAQ

Myth: The calcium in baby’s teeth is leeched from mother’s teeth.
Fact: Calcium is needed to help build baby’s teeth and bones, but it should primarily come from expectant mother’s diet and not her body. If the mother does not have an adequate intake of calcium, this essential mineral may come from mother’s calcium stored in her bones. That’s why a healthy diet is important throughout pregnancy.

Myth: Pregnant women should avoid seeing the dentist until after they deliver.
Fact: The best time to visit the dentist for a cleaning and checkup is prior to becoming pregnant to ensure a healthy mouth. You may be more prone to develop gingivitis or have increased acidity because of getting sick. So you want to make sure you are seeing the dentist to avoid any issues while you are pregnant.

Bad teeth run in my family
Teeth are inherited but the bad habits of previous generations do not have to be. A good oral hygiene regimen can prevent cavities and gum disease. Teeth alignment is what usually is inherited due to discrepancies in tooth shape, size and jaw size. For example, crowding or spacing. Eating Habits during development of the teeth can also affect the health of teeth. Not having enough calcium in the diet during teeth development may cause the teeth to be weaker and predispose it to cavities. Having fluoride in the diet during teeth development has also shown to strengthen teeth and resist cavity formation.

I only need the dentist when I have a toothache
No you should be seeing a dentist every 6 months for preventive treatment. If you are only waiting until something hurts then you are going to invest more money into the treatment and more discomfort.

Bleeding gums means I brush too hard
No nothing else on your body bleeds when you clean it, so if your gums are bleeding it means that you have gingivitis which is the start to gum disease.

Teeth Whitening Harms my teeth
No the only side effect to whitening is sensitivity. Whitening is a great way to freshen up your smile. You can not whiten teeth if they have decay, fillings or crowns so that is something to consider before having the treatment done. But in an hour you can get great results from whitening and we make take home trays for patients to be able to maintain the shade that they get while they are in the office.
