Amy A. Vaughan, Dermatology PLLC FAQ
Q: What are signs & symptoms of skin cancer?
A: Any new or pre-existing spot on your skin which itches, burns, or bleeds easily can potentially be a sign or symptom of skin cancer. Colors of skin cancer range from shiny and clear to red, brown, blue or black. If there is any question at all, get it checked!
Q: I’m an adult, why do I have acne?
A: Adults, especially females, may develop acne due to hormones, stress or skin care products. Genetics play a role as well. Numerous successful treatments are available depending on the cause. Treatments range from topical creams, lotions and gels to more advanced Isolaz laser therapy.
Q: When should moles be checked / what age?
A: A baseline skin exam is a good idea for people over 50 years of age or anyone of any age who is at high risk for skin cancer. Risk factors include prolonged sun exposure/tanning bed use, family history of skin cancer, personal history of skin cancer or a large number of moles or skin growths.
Q: Should sunscreen be applied all year around?
A: Sunscreens should be applied every day all year despite the “season” or weather. The primary preventable cause of aging is UV radiation. An ideal sunscreen should contain an organic or chemical sunscreen, an inorganic physical sunscreen (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) and an antioxidant (Vitamin A,C,E and selenium) along with skin conditioning agents. The SPF should be at least a 15.
Q: I want to do something about my wrinkles, do I need botulinum toxin (Botox / Dysport) or a soft tissue filler?
A: Squinting & frowning can cause lines on forehead, brows, nose and corner of the eyes. These lines can be diminished by weakening these muscles with botulinim toxin injected into the wrinkled areas. Soft tissue fillers are flexible substances injected into the skin to temporarily improve lines and wrinkles, plump lips, fill hollows in cheeks & scars and elevate deeper folds.
Q: My child has “sensitive skin” or eczema, what should I do?
A: Eczema or atopic dermatitis is part of the atopy triad consisting of one or all of the following: asthma, hay fever, and eczema. A rash may be present with itching or white to pink discoloration. These children are intolerant to strong soaps, fragrance, dyes and can have food or environmental sensitivities. Therapy requires moisturizers, antihistamines, and often prescription creams or ointments.
