Buckeye Rural Electric is part of Touchstone Energy’s ‘Together We Save’ campaign that illustrates numerous ways our member-consumers can reduce their energy bills – and thereby save themselves money – by implementing a variety of changes around their homes and businesses. 

Whether its unplugging unused appliances or adding an extra layer of insulation in the attic, what we’re showing is how simple these energy-saving techniques are, so that the end-use consumer goes from just thinking about changing some of their habits to actually taking action!

Q: How can I save electricity on something I can't shut off like a hot water heater?
A: You can save money by keeping the water temperature no higher than 120 degrees. Drain 1-2 gallons from the bottom each year to reduce sediments build up. Insulate exposed hot water lines. Install low flow shower heads and never let the water run while shaving or brushing your teeth.
Q: What can I do in the kitchen to save?
A: Clean your refrigerator coils annually. Check the refrigerator gaskets to make sure they are sealing tightly. Use the microwave for cooking when possible. When cooking on the oven range, use pot lids to help food cook faster. Use a crockpot instead of simmering foods on the stove.
Q: Can shades and draperies help conserve energy?
A: Absolutely! Close your shades and drapes at night to keep heat in during the winter. Make sure drapes and shades are open during the day to catch free solar heat in the winter. Close shades and drapes during the day to keep heat out in the summer.
Q: What's the best way to save energy using ceiling fans in my house?
A: to make the best use of your homes heating and cooling unit, be sure to run your paddle fans on medium, blowing down in the summer and on low blowing up in the winter
Q: What can the kids to do help?
A: Teach your children to turn off all their electrical devices when not in use. Turn off computers AND their monitors when finished. Large screen TV's need to be completely shut off when not in use. Stereos, radios, curling irons and hot rollers all drain electricity. Unplug battery chargers when batteries are not being charged.
