When I was trying to find a local mom who would serve as a good example about "eating for two" the right way, I quickly thought of Heather Gauquie of Greenville. She's a pilates instructor who takes great care of herself. When I asked about her nutrition habits, I was not surprised to hear she is all about healthy food, especially while pregnant. One of the most poignant pieces of advice Heather gave had to do with junk food. She said it's easy for her to make the choice of healthy food over junk food when she's pregnant. The reason? You may not be feeling your best since your body is working so hard at building this tiny life inside you, so why make yourself feel worse by eating junk food? Now there's some food for thought. I think of that nugget of wisdom every time I'm tempted to eat something unhealthy. Most of the time, that advice is able to keep me on the healthy path.
I was also very intrigued with Heather's use of flax seed. She adds it into her spaghetti sauce, sprinkles it on her cereal and even uses it as an egg substitute. Flax seed is a great source of Omega-3 fatty acids and fiber. I started adding it to my banana smoothies and pumpkin muffin mix, and I'm always looking for other ways to sneak it in. Honestly, I can't taste it, but I know it's doing good things for baby and me.
I am sure there are other moms out there with fabulous tips on how to eat healthy. You don't even really have to be a mom to have good advice. Please share your thoughts!
