Sometimes it’s nice to getaway. And sometimes you want to getaway with the girls. That’s just what we did last fall.
Most of my getaways are with my family...Jon, me and the kids. But my mom had just turned 70, and I wanted to do some special outings with her. In September, we went to New York City, and mom loved it. So, the first weekend in November, my sister-in-law, her 70-year-old friend, Joyce, and my mom and I drove to the Kansas City area for the weekend.
We stayed in Atchison, Kansas, the home of the American aviation pioneer, Amelia Earhart. This Missouri River town is also the home of the home interior store, Nell Hill’s. And let me tell you, this store has a following!
We toured the home of Nell Hill’s owner, Mary Carol Garrity. She had her historic Atchison mansion decked out for the holidays. And ladies came by the busloads to get inside and discover new decorating ideas.
The store itself was also packed full of Christmas decorations, and...more people! You could hardly walk! I bumped into one of our viewers from the Beatrice, Nebraska area. Here’s a link to the Nell Hill’s site: http://www.nellhills.com/index.php
Atchison really is a cute river town…filled with the unexpected like the Marigold Bakery and Café. We loved the grilled cheese dippers filled with provolone, American and Swiss cheese on focaccia bread and tomato soup.
We stayed at a charming Bed and Breakfast called Tuck U Inn at Glick Mansion. Here’s the website: http://glickmansion.com/
Our Sunday brunch was amazing, and Chris gave us the recipes to many of her famous dishes! We also spent the morning with other guests, gathered around the baby grand piano and singing hymns. It was so relaxing to just “be in the moment” with no worries, and doing something totally different. I also loved finding new piano music!
And what girls weekend is complete without more shopping! We drove about an hour to the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City to continue our Christmas shopping and of course, treat ourselves a bit, too.
I think mom and Joyce really had a great time. They became good friends…both good conversationalists and energetic 70 year olds! It was so fun to escape to someplace new, yet familiar, less than 200 miles from home.
Sometimes, we get so wrapped up in our daily routines, that we forget to take time for ourselves. Moms, we need that girl time! I had forgotten how fun this can be! I’ll always treasure these trips with my mom.
I’d love to hear about your girls getaways! I need more ideas for our next excursion!
Until next time,
