Seventeen years ago I said “I do” to Jon Vanderford. I started dating this curly-haired guy from Cass County, Nebraska about five years prior. You could say we played beautiful music together and marched to the same beat. We were Cornhusker Marching Band members who met on the field.

I was quiet. Jon…not so much. He was the guy who dressed up like our band director for skits. He and his brother were “Jake” and “Elwood” in a “Blues Brothers” band. So, being on the shy side, I was a little iffy to hang out with Jon and all his crazy friends at the Citrus Bowl in Miami.

But it was there, with a bunch of friends, that my crush first developed for Jon. He later would leave me notes on my car. We would ride together to marching band rank leader meetings. And eventually... we became a couple.

And five years into dating, he proposed to me live on the air! I was working as a radio announcer at 96.9 KZKX when Jon came into the studio dressed in a tux and popped the question.

On June 8th, 1996, we married in my home church in Pender, Nebraska. It was a big, small town affair with us leaving the church in a wagon pulled by mules.

Hard to believe it's been 17 years since that picture perfect spring day. We've lived in Tennessee, had two wonderful kids, and now attend Husker games sitting in the stands instead of marching on the field.

The beat goes on… and through the good and bad times, I’m happy to be "marching" side by side at 10/11 News with my best friend.

Thanks for watching us each day!
