We’ve all done it. You walk out of the grocery store wondering how the amount you spent got so high and you feel like you don’t have enough to show for it.

Josh Elledge of SavingsAngel.com says you could be making some common mistakes in those grocery aisles.

Mistake #1: Do you shop without a plan? This is a mistake that can cost you. Elledge says to save and have a dinner, always use a shopping list, coupons and a plan.

Mistake #2: Are you flexible with your purchases? “If you won’t try a new product or different brand because you always have to buy specific ones, your grocery bill is going to be high,” Elledge said. “To save be willing to try new or different brands.”

Mistake #3: Do you know retail prices? “Stores sell the same exact products at different price points,” Elledge said. “Knowing what is truly a good deal and what isn’t is critical.” To save, keep a price list of the items you regularly buy and from what stores.

Mistake #4: Do you shop around? It’s a big loss when you don’t realize what you just bought was half price somewhere else. “Purchasing everything from one store just because you're already there results in over paying,” Elledge said. “To save, compare ads store to store and go where you get the best price.”

Mistake #5: Do you buy ahead and stock up? “When you run into the store and get only what you need for the immediate future, you spend more it the long run,” Elledge said. “To save big snag all the don’t miss deals each week at your local stores even if you don’t need the items yet. That way you avoid paying full retail later.”
