Is your child ready to swim in the ocean?

Your child may be a great swimmer in the backyard pool, but how do you know if they’re ready for the ocean?

According to Safe Kids Worldwide, having swimming experience is a good start, but there are additional safety concerns to consider in the ocean.

Here are some tips from Safe Kids’ Ask an Expert series:

First, be aware of hidden hazards, like uneven surfaces, rip currents and undertows. Discuss how these things can make swimming in the open water dangerous even for experienced swimmers. Encourage them to ease into the water, not go too deep and be aware of their surroundings.

Second, always swim with a partner.

And finally, consider life jackets. This is non-negotiable for water activities like boating, jet skiing or kayaking. For younger kids or inexperienced swimmers, look for a U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket that fits correctly.
